Cyrus Penned Love Song About McCartney

Teen sensation Miley Cyrus was left red-faced after meeting pop hunk Jesse McCartney - because he was her first ever celebrity crush. The Hannah Montana star became a huge fan of the singer when he was part of now defunct boyband Dream - and the star was the inspiration behind the first song the 15-year-old penned. But Cyrus was left embarrassed after she was introduced to the McCartney shortly after moving to Hollywood, because he branded her lyrical tribute "cute". She says, "It was so embarrassing, when I first moved to Los Angeles, I had a crush on Jesse McCartney. "In fact, the first song I ever wrote was about Jesse. He was on my show and I told him and he was like, 'That's so cute!'" But Cyrus has now set her sights on a slightly more mature man. She adds, "Orlando Bloom is gorgeous, but he's a bit of a player."

Indie prison flicks are breakout trend

Allegory for powerlessness or just exploitation?

CANNES -- With boxoffice for indie films taking a nose dive and new Cannes market titles seen as tough to market, many North American buyers feel like they're in a kind of prison, living day to day with little hope, their spirits beaten down again and again.

Perhaps it's because so many of the films they've been seeing lately have characters going to prison, in prison or just out of prison. At a time when distributors are desperately seeking upbeat indie fare after many dark dramas and Iraq War films have failed, what could be bleaker?

Cannes alone featured more than 10 films on the subject, including "Lion's Den," about Argentinean women raising their toddlers in jail; "My Life Inside," a docu about a Mexican woman imprisoned in Texas; and "Wendy and Lucy," in which Michelle Williams gets arrested for shoplifting dog food. None of these women-in-prison films, however, carries the commercial genre appeal of, say, a tormented Linda Blair in "Born Innocent" or one of Jonathan Demme's proudest moments, the women's prison riot flick "Caged Heat."

Men behind bars can now be found in abundance. In James Toback's docu "Tyson," the heavyweight champ recalls fellow inmates throwing "fecal matter" at guards. Adding to the fun, "Four Nights With Anna" centers on a man released from prison for a rape he didn't commit -- only to be arrested for another rape he didn't commit.

Although most buyers have shied away from the subject matter, IFC Films fearlessly has taken the plunge in Cannes, picking up U.S. rights to the intense IRA prison hunger strike drama "Hunger." Defamer's S.T. VanAirsdale thinks there might even be a market for such films. "Millions of Americans have been to prison," he said. "It's kind of nostalgic."

And a few filmmakers are taking a more accessible, lighthearted approach to incarceration. On the heels of the comedies "Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay" and "Let's Go to Prison," Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor will soon be seen as amorous cellmates in "I Love You Phillip Morris."

So what is it about prison that's creating a flood in the theatrical pipeline?

"Filmmakers always position themselves as the underdog," Movie City News columnist Ray Pride said. "If you're confined in a prison cell, what more apt allegory for being powerless is there?"

Dustin Smith, a film scholar and director of acquisitions at Roadside Attractions, has another take. "I'd like to think that it's a collective, worldwide yearning to break free of the constrictive and terrifying times in which we've all been living the past few years," he said. "But my guess is that it's more just an artistically acceptable way to film poop, nudity and chicks fighting."

Production issues to delay Coldplay tour

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Coldplay has been forced to postpone the start of its North American tour by two weeks because of unspecified "production delays which mean that the show simply won't be ready" for its planned June 29 kickoff in Philadelphia.

The itinerary will now begin with a July 14-15 stand in Los Angeles; it was to close August 4 in Chicago but will instead wrap that day in Boston. Tickets for the scrapped dates will be valid for the new ones, but refunds are also available at points of purchase. An updated itinerary is posted on the band's Web site (http://www.coldplay.com).

Coldplay's previously announced free shows in London (June 16), Barcelona (June 17) and New York (June 23) will go on as planned, as will a July 27 show at the first Pemberton Festival in British Columbia.

After the conclusion of the first North American leg, the group will tour international markets through early October, after which it begins another round of North American dates. In 2009, Coldplay will play European stadiums and might play such venues in North America as well -- "if we can do the business," manager Dave Holmes told Billboard.

The band's fourth album, "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," will be released June 16 internationally via Parlophone/EMI and a day later in North America via Capitol. First single "Viva La Vida" last week became the biggest hit of Coldplay's career by jumping from No. 10 to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Mother alleging Spears was drugged

Britney Spears' mother has alleged that the 26-year-old singer was "drugged" by her self-styled manager, Sam Lufti, in order to take control of her life, home and money.
Reuters reports that Lynne Spears' allegations were contained in a sworn declaration submitted to the court in order to obtain a temporary restraining order against Lufti.
The restraining order against Lufti forbids him from contacting Spears in any way.
In the declaration, Lynne Spears alleged: "Mr Lutfi drugged Britney. He has cut Britney's home phone line and removed her cell-phone chargers. He yells at her. He claims to control everything - Britney's business manager, her attorneys and security guards at the gate."
Lynne Spears describes arriving at her daughter's home on 28 January and finding her in a confused state.
She said: "Britney... became very agitated and could not stop moving. She cleaned the house. She changed her clothes many times. She also changed her dogs' clothes many times. Britney spoke to me in a tone and with the level of understanding of a very young girl."
The singer's mother claims that Lufti told her and a friend that he gave the 26-year-old tablets ground up in her food to keep her quiet and told the troubled entertainer that she had to take "10 pills a day" if she wanted to see her two young sons.
Britney Spears' father Jamie and attorney Andrew Wallete have been granted temporary control of the star's assets, pending further legal proceedings.
A judge has ruled that Spears must be examined by a court-appointed psychiatrist to determine if she understands the legal proceedings.

Spears' young sons visit her home

Britney Spears' two young sons have visited the star at her home for the second time in the last few days.
According to People magazine, the singer's sons, two-year-old Preston and one-year-old Jayden, were taken to her studio home yesterday by her ex-husband Kevin Federline's bodyguard.
The children reportedly spent three hours in the company of their mother on the latest visit.
The two boys had previously visited their mother on Saturday, which was the first time Spears had seen her sons since 3 January, when they were placed in the sole custody of their father.
Spears and Federline have reportedly worked out a "structured visitation arrangement", according to the report.
